This study examined relations between ethnicity, family environments, and young adolescents' cognitive performance. A model of proximal family learning environment was constructed that included measures of family human capital, parenting style, parents' aspirations, and parenting practices. Data were collected from 800 young adolescents and their parents from Anglo-Australian, English, Greek, and Southern Italian groups within Australia. The analysis revealed that (a) ethnicity was related to young adolescents' cognitive performance and to measures of their proximal family environment, (b) proximal family environment measures mediated the relations between ethnicity and cognitive performance, and (c) there were gender-related differences in the associations between ethnicity, proximal family environment, and young adolescents' cognitive performance.
