AbstractBacteria belonging to 10 genera were isolated from rumen contents using cellulose, starch, xylan, pectin, casein, glycerol, and lactic acid as substrates. A species of Butyribacterium similar to Butyribacterium rettgeri Prevot was isolated from the rumen for the first time. This organism produces acetic and butyric acids from lactic acid. No Bacteroides species were isolated.
