It is the position of this article that our understanding and research of health behaviour and health promotion will be considerably advanced when it is conceptualized, conducted and interpreted within the frame of reference of a person—environment dynamic interaction model, thereby taking into account the continuous process of change that characterizes all behaviour. By no means is the present author the first to call attention to the merits of the person - environment or ecological approach to the understanding of health behaviour, but few systematic attempts at formulating a meta-theory and research within this framework have been produced to date. The recent work by psychologist Norman S.Endler of York University is one notable endeavour to stimulate work in the study of personality and health behaviour. The present article is intended to provide a conceptual framework for further heuristic and systematic efforts in health behaviour and health promotion work. |
