Twenty-seven women with soft-tissue pelvic infections were treated with intravenous cefoxitin sodium. The primary diagnoses of infection included salpingo-oöphoritis (15 patients), post-hysterectomy pelvic cellulitis (5 patients), post-partum endomyo-metritis (6 patients), and infected abortion (1 patient). Anaerobic bacteria were recovered from cultures taken from 10 of 16 patients (63%) who underwent needle culdocentesis prior to initiation of therapy. Bacteroides fragilis was isolated in 7 of these 10 patients. The clinical response to cefoxitin was excellent, with 25 of 27 patients responding favorably.
