| dc.description | A range of formulations of PVC has been subjected to an in vitro test for cytotoxicity and in vivo assessment of fibrogenicity. The majority of the formulations show low cytotoxicity. In the case of emulsion paste polymers the cytotoxic effects observed were attributed to the presence of industrial surfactant in the formulation. All powders tested in vivo, including an example of an emulsion paste polymer, showed minimal in vivo tissue reaction when administered by either intratracheal or intraperitoneal injection. The tissue reaction to PVC consisted of either a ‘foreign-body’ reaction or a thin fibrous capsule only and was quite distinct from the progressive changes induced by a quartz. |
