SUMMARYThe effects of a negative expiratory phase on cardiac output, arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure and heart rate were measured in six seriously ill patients undergoing artificial ventilation in an intensive care unit. Cardiac output was increased in one patient and decreased in two others. The circulatory benefit of a negative phase was considered to be minimal.
