Electron spin resonance detection of nitric oxide and pentacyanonitrosylferrate(III) in γ-irradiated anhydrous sodium nitroprusside

Exposure of anhydrous sodium nitroprusside to <sup>60</sup>Co γ-rays at 77 K resulted in e.s.r. spectra of two species. One had g ⠥= 2·0142 and g ⠥= 2·0716 at 77 K, with no resolved coupling to <sup>14</sup>N. By comparison with data for other d <sup>5</sup> pentacyanonitrosyls, it is concluded that this species is the pentacyanonitrosylferrate(III). The other species had g and <sup>14</sup>N hyperfine tensors characteristic of librating nitric oxide.
