The paper surveys some recent work on reactions of high temperature species with ordinary compounds on a liquid-nitrogen-cooled surface. Useful syntheses with metal vapours, metal salt vapours, and low-valency boron and silicon compounds, are described. Some reactions which failed are also reported and the reasons for unpredictability in the low-temperature reactions are discussed.
