In recent years, catalysis by gold has become and extensively researched field and regularly new discoveries are reported. It is a major change in fortune for a metal long considered to be nonreactive. In this chapter the background information concerning gold as an active catalyst, together with the use of supported gold nanoparticles for the selective catalytic oxidation of alcohols and alkenes will be described to provide an introduction into the fascinating topic of catalysis by gold.
