About the fundamental postulate of statistical mechanics

Abstract

The 'generalised' version (based on Jaynes's principle) of the fundamental postulate of statistical mechanics is confronted with the usual (microcanonical) formulation. It is argued that the 'generalised' postulate should be taken with some caution, at least at the pedagogical level.
