The motion of relativistic electrons close to the xy plane when subjected to static magnetic and electric fields (0, 0, B0) and (0, E0(1-ay), E0az) is analysed, B0, E0 and a being positive constants. The focusing properties of the fields are investigated, and an expression is derived for the drift velocity of the particles in the direction of the positive x axis. The dependence of the latter quantity on the initial direction of motion and on the energy of the particles is discussed. Finally, the practical realization of the required electric field is considered. Throughout, the relevance of the analysis to the authors' electron-positron g-factor comparison experiment is emphasized.
