A range of experiments which utilise a radioactive variable-energy x-ray source and a xenon-methane-filled gas proportional counter are described. The experiments include determinations of photoelectric cross sections and the interpretation of pulse amplitude spectra. The level is appropriate to undergraduate courses and projects in nuclear science.
