The introduction of image algebra has made it possible to express much of the image processing literature in a very concise form. The resulting expressions have themselves suggested many new ideas. Restoration in general and the phase problem in particular have, however, received much less attention than enhancement and analysis. The authors show that iterative methods of the Gerchberg-Saxton type can be fitted naturally into the algebraic formalism.
