On the quasilocal energy of axially-symmetric spacetimes

Explicit formulae are derived for the quasilocal energy of a generic axially-symmetric spacetime with small deviation from spherical symmetry. It is shown that at the horizon the energy reduces to twice the irreducible mass of a black hole. The case of the Ernst--Schwarzschild black hole with a magnetic field is briefly discussed as an illustration.
