Invertibility is established for the mathematical formulation most often used to describe the one-dimensional magnetotelluric problem. For a large space of conductivity functions (with no analyticity requirements), recovery of the conductivity function from magnetotelluric data is shown to be unique. This provides a basis to extend Weidelt's Gelfand-Levitan theory to a significantly more general setting.
