The deconvolution of the history of CO2 concentrations in polar ice corresponds to the solution of a Volterra integral equation of the first kind and so a variety of techniques are available for obtaining numerical solutions. However, by writing the solution in terms of an explicit inversion kernel, it is possible to determine which aspects of the CO2 data and the carbon cycle model are of most importance in obtaining estimates of current sources of atmospheric CO2.
