dc.description | We have performed <sup>57</sup>Fe Mössbauer measurements on aligned iron-doped crystallites of La<sub>2-x</sub>Sr<sub>x</sub>CuO<sub>4-y</sub>. From the intensity ratio of the two quadrupole lines we deduce that the main axis of the elctric-field gradient does not coincide with the c-axis of the lattice. This surprising result indicates that at the iron ion the local symmetry around the c-axis is not fourfold. The implications of this result are briefly discussed. |
