The outward motion of the thin wall of laser-heated small gold cavities was investigated using 6-frame optical and single-frame x-ray backlighting. The measured velocity is attributed to the pressure produced by an ablative heat wave which is driven into the wall by thermal soft-X-ray radiation generated in the cavity.
