A new method is proposed to calculate the contribution of virtual Ps formation to elastic positron-atom scattering. The calculations were performed using the many-body perturbation theory approach. It is shown that for the scattering of positrons by hydrogen and helium atoms, the virtual Ps formation contribution is about 30% and 20% of the total correlation potential, respectively. Good agreement was obtained with the results of precise variational calculations and with experimental data. |
