2p absorption spectra of atomic copper using the soft X-ray absorption and total photoion yield methods

The soft X-ray photoabsorption and total photoion yield spectra of atomic Cu have been determined in the range of the L-edges. At the L<sub>2</sub> and L<sub>3</sub> thresholds there are clearly visible jumps in the absorption cross section. Superimposed on this step-like increase are weak but in part surprisingly sharp structures. The atomic data are compared both to Hartree-Fock calculations and the soft X-ray absorption of copper metal.
