dc.description Auger transitions having a non-vanishing spin polarization are usually anisotropic with respect to their angular distribution. The spin polarization vector components depend also on the angular distribution of the Auger electrons. Thus, their experimental determination is somewhat tedious in the most cases. An anisotropic angular distribution depends on the existence of an alignment whereas the in-scattering-plane components of the spin polarization vector are connected with both the orientation and the alignment of the primary ion. It is possible however to identify special cases where the ion is oriented but not aligned. For this special type of Auger transitions the general equations describing the spin polarization of the emitted Auger electrons can be simplified which should give the opportunity of a simpler experiment. The authors have calculated the spin polarization parameters for some of these special Auger transitions for the case of the rare gases. Applying the extreme LS coupling approximation upper and lower bounds for the initial orientation can be given which allow predictions for the in-plane components of the spin polarization vector for these transitions.
