The Optical Group of the Institute of Physics is the UK's national optical society. It can trace back its history to the foundation of the Optical Society of London in 1899. This year, therefore, the Optical Group is celebrating its centenary. This introduction to a special celebratory edition of Journal of Optics A looks at the early days of the society.
