The He II alpha photoelectron spectra of atomic Ca and Sr have been recorded. The np^-1 ionisation observed is compared with the corresponding Rydberg absorption spectra, Auger spectra and configuration interaction calculations and reasonable agreement is obtained. Anomalous features observed in the spectra have been attributed to discharge contamination and autoionisation for Ca and Sr respectively. The analysis indicates that configuration interaction is more important for the heavier atom.
