The spectral distribution of high-energy non-characteristic X-rays in symmetric (Z1=Z2) ion-atom collisions is investigated in the framework of a dynamical model which takes into account the effects connected with the rotation of the quasimolecular axis. Intense 2p sigma molecular orbital (MO) radiation tails are no longer predicted in the spectral region where two-collision 1s sigma MO radiation is known to dominate in solid-target experiments. Therefore the data reported for medium-mass systems (Z1,Z2 approximately=28,...,41) are well reproduced.
