dc.description Selective field ionisation of helium n<sup>1</sup>P Rydberg atoms with n approximately=41 has been investigated. The helium n<sup>1</sup>P states are of particular interest because they have negative quantum defects and thus lie above the higher l levels of their respective manifolds. This leads to unusual field ionisation behaviour. Results are presented for He(41<sup>1</sup>P) atoms and effects associated with diabatic passage through zero electric field are noted.
