L X-ray emission from high-Z elements after ionisation by 1 MeV u<sup>-1</sup> Ag ions

L X-ray spectra from seven elements (Yb, Ta, W, Pt, Au, Pb and Th) bombarded by 1 MeV u<sup>-1</sup> silver ions were studied with a Si(Li) detector. The observed intensity ratios are consistent with theory if the rates calculated for a single vacancy are multiplied by a statistical scaling factor. Conversely, the measured ratios imply a high degree of multiple ionisation in the outer shells. An L<sub>1</sub>-O<sub>4,5</sub> transition is discovered in ion-atom collisions.
