High-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline U(C<sub>0.60</sub>N<sub>0.40</sub>) have shown that the optical phonon modes are split into two peaks corresponding respectively to local vibrations of carbon and nitrogen. This confirms a simple Einstein oscillator model for these light atoms in rocksalt-structure uranium and thorium compounds.
