Optical absorption band measurements of Au<sup>+</sup> substitutional impurity in KCl were obtained at room temperature. A molecular cluster model interpretation using the electronic structure calculated by the multiple scattering-X<sub>alpha </sub> method is in fairly good agreement with the experimental results.
