The authors have observed that for a triglycine sulphate crystal plate cut parallel to the monoclinic C2 axis, with the electric field of the far infrared radiation parallel to C2, Beer's law is not satisfied at 4K from 20 to 140 cm-1 while it is at 80K. They have shown there are surface layers at 4K with a thickness larger than 1 mu m and they are mostly responsible for the whole far infrared spectrum while the bulk is nearly transparent although at 80K the bulk has the same spectrum as the surface. It is concluded that surface layers observed at 4K are due to a phase transition in the bulk between 4 and 80K which does not affect the surface. This assumption is confirmed by a large step variation ( Delta epsilon =3.3) of permittivity at T0 approximately=44K, and by specific heat data observed several years ago by Lawless (1976) which contain a contribution in T3/2 which increases with S/V, the surface-to-volume ratio of the sample. |
