The temperature dependence of the first anisotropy constant of the garnet system Y3Fe5-xMnxO12 (x=0.006, 0.043) is reported. From the experimental results the single Mn3+ ion contribution k1 to the anisotropy constant is deduced and analysed. It is shown that the observed large and positive values of k1 may be explained on the basis of the existing theory of the Jahn-Teller effect of the octahedrally coordinated Mn3+ ion.
