A revised Peierls transition theory is presented for both quasi-1D and quasi-2D systems. For two simple models of the temperature-dependent higher-dimensional correlations, a new kind of Peierls-instability-induced transition is suggested, and this is used to account for the observed anomalies in the resistivity and heat capacity of NbSe<sub>3</sub> in a self contained manner. |
