dc.description The authors consider the excitation processes for Er3+ emissions in the thioindates CdIn2S4,ZnIn2S4 when excited in the Stokes and anti-Stokes modes. It has been found that in the anti-Stokes case the lattice itself is of little importance since the processes involve only the interactions between the rare earth ions. Under Stokes excitation, however, the lattice is all important since the processes involve the non-radiative transfer of the energy, provided by the recombination of electron-hole pairs, to the rare earth ion. In this case there are competing mechanisms for the recombination energy so the efficiency of excitation of the Er3+ ions will depend on the balance between these competing mechanisms and thereby depend on the host lattice.
