The shape of the hysteresis loop which is obtained for a thin ferromagnetic film by using the transverse Kerr effect is shown to be critically dependent on the incident azimuth when the film is driven along or close to the hard axis. The shapes of loops obtained experimentally for a low-dispersion cobalt film are compared with those predicted.
