Repeated indentations of a diamond surface by a spherical diamond indenter cause a progressive build-up of surface damage and the eventual appearance of short cracks lying along cleavage planes. These results confirm the existence of fatigue type effects in diamond suggested by other earlier experiments. Electron-microscope studies indicate that at least part of the irreversibility responsible for the fatigue is associated with the incomplete closing of cracks opened under load.
