dc.description The model for heat conduction, first considered by Rayleigh (1892) in which a two-phase composite material is regarded as spheres of the dispersed phase situated in a lattice in the continuous phase, is systematically formulated and solved. An exact asymptotic result is obtained for the case where the spheres are infinitely conducting and nearly touching. This is the first time that a 'dense' model system has been accurately solved.
