A laser transit anemometer has been used to measure velocities and flow angles in a transonic turbine cascade. The results agreed with calculated data to better than 4% for both parameters. A comparison with probe results for flow angles obtained in a similar blade row showed that the probe measured much larger angle changes across shear flows than were obtained with the laser anemometer, e.g. 15 degrees compared to 3 degrees . Measurements in the base flow region of the turbine blades showed that the laser anemometer could spatially resolve the root position of the trailing blades showed that the laser anemometer could spatially resolve the root position of the trailing edge chock fronts and also identify the source of the high frequency vortex shedding 4 mm from the blade trailing edge. The frequency of the vortex shedding was measured to be 160 kHz at Mach number 1.4.
