dc.description The output wavelength of a small pulsed Nd:YAG laser can be converted with good efficiency to an eye-safe region at 1.54 mu m using stimulated Raman scattering in compressed methane. In the presence of limiting factors such as medium depletion, stimulated Brillouin scattering and gas breakdown, the conversion is strongly intensity dependent and the focusing geometry must be chosen with care. Experimental and theoretical results are presented to illustrate and quantify these effects.
