| dc.description | In experimental investigations of the surface magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials using the Kerr magneto-optical effect, difficulties can arise in the interpretation of signals if the polarizer transmission axis is set at an arbitrary angle to the plane of incidence. A rigorous method of interpretation is given here on the basis of a combination of the transverse and longitudinal Kerr effects. Particular experimental arrangements which allow of simplified interpretation are also briefly discussed. |
