A CW multi-line He-Cd<sup>+</sup> laser is described which uses a geometry of alternating hollow cathode and annular anode elements. Operating parameters are measured systematically to optimise the efficiency of the laser and its spectral output. The laser emits on up to seven transitions simultaneously, and balanced white-light emission has been achieved. The role of different mechanisms for the population of some of the upper laser levels is clarified.
