dc.description Multilayer films containing polypyrrole mixed with palmitic acid were built up using a technique based on Langmuir-Blodgett deposition followed by two solid state reactions. The resulting films exhibited a room temperature, in-plane dc conductivity of 20 S and a conductivity in the out-of-plane direction seven orders of magnitude smaller. A study of the film structure by x-rays and surface profiling measurements was undertaken for all the steps in the preparation. Ac and dc conductivities were measured over the temperature range 90-300 K. A variable-range hopping model provided a good description of the dc conductivity whereas the ac behaviour was interpreted in terms of the Cole-Davidson function.
