In part I of the present work, theoretical predictions were made of the upper and lower current limits of a low-pressure gas discharge, and the variation of the limits with gas pressure and tube diameter. Experimental confirmation of these predictions is presented. The simple relation between arc current and ion wall current employed in part I is confirmed with the use of wall probes. The total flux of heavy particles to and from the discharge walls is measured and found to be independent of arc current. The predictions of neutral gas depletion are confirmed using the technique of resonance radiation absorption. The variation of excited state densities at current limit is measured and confirms that at current limit the electron energy distribution always attains the same limiting form.
