Absorption saturation in p-type germanium (mode-locked CO<sub>2</sub> lasers)

The change in absorption of p-type germanium, due to illumination at 10.59 mu m, has been measured over the wavelength range 9.2-10.8 mu m. The results show that the absorption is inhomogeneously broadened but the frequency width of the burnt hole is sufficient to allow two or more passively mode-locked CO<sub>2</sub> lasers to be locked together.
