A device is described for the production and injection of small deuterium specks (volume similar 10<sup>−5</sup> cm<sup>3</sup>) into a vacuum region, where they are ionized by a giant pulse delivered by a Q-switched neodynium laser. The specks are injected in such a way that a reasonably high percentage of them cross the laser focal spot region. The performance of the device is reported.
