A simple 10 kN hydraulic tensile straining stage is described, cheaply constructed using standard automobile parts. The instrument has been used on a Minisem microscope to investigate fracture processes in fibreglass laminates. The hydraulic pressure is monitored to measure the load applied and the samples are fitted with resistance strain gauges.
