The construction and principles of two variable-frequency butterfly oscillators spanning the frequency range from 200 to 650 MHz are described. Sample sizes as small as 1 g can be used and the frequency can be continuously swept over a range of at least 100 MHz in searching for new resonances. Spectrometers incorporating these oscillators have been used under conditions of automatic gain control, sideband suppression and automatic frequency calibration.
