dc.description Bimodal cavities were found to give a Faraday rotation in a magnetic field, arising from the Hall effect in the cavity walls, which seriously limited the application of this technique to low-mobility materials. Methods of reducing the empty cavity signals are described, and new results are reported for biological materials which differ from earlier published values. In particular, no support can be adduced for earlier views on band conduction in the mitochondrial electron transfer system.
