Two simple but accurate methods are described for the measurement of thermal relaxation times, both using a modulated IR beam from an arc lamp as the source of thermal excitation. Results are obtained for several metal ion-alanine systems and compared with results obtained using a more conventional T-jump apparatus. Different methods of obtaining lifetimes from modulation methods are compared and contrasted.
