dc.description The authors present an experimental study of planar impact experiments, intended to show the use of manganin stress gauges in recording the fine details of the shock wave structure in Armco iron. They show how to reduce the electrical noise picked up by a gauge that is placed near a moving conductor. This enabled them to record the various features of shock evolution in iron such as the elastic precursor decay, stress relaxation behind the elastic wave and rise time of the plastic wave.
