An open-loop control sampling valve which uses the displacement of a thin diaphragm, produced by an electromagnetic actuator, to control air flow across a narrow annular passage is described. Its large flow capacity of up to 400 ml s-1 and fast response make it suitable for sampling air proportional to the vertical wind velocity, a requirement for measuring the flux density of atmospheric gases using the eddy accumulation technique.
