dc.description A modulation collimator suitable for observational X-ray astronomy in the 10-100 keV region is constructed, and its performance technically assessed. It is found that the peak transmission is at 37+or-2% of the total signal, as compared with the theoretical value of 50%. More detailed investigations reveal that the deterioration of modulation properties at high energies is due to the parallax effect of a slightly diverging incident beam, the incomplete absorption of primary radiation by the collimator wire material (tungsten), and the presence of secondary radiation which is Compton scattered off the beam by the wires. The last effect, estimated at a <or approximately=1.5% level, appears to be an intrinsic limitation to the use of collimators at hard X-ray energies.
